Description
Lighted Stop Bar Systems employ In-Road
Warning Lights (IRWLs) to create a bright red,
unmistakable cue to motorists to stop for an
approaching light rail vehicle. These systems,
activated by train passage detectors or traffic
signal controllers, reduce red light running and
consequent injury.
Lighted Stop Bar Systems are monitored
and optionally activated by the Spot Devices
System Infrastructure Management
Applications (SIMA) suite, a set of secure
Web-based tools for remote, enterprise-wide
supervision of all Spot Devices systems.
Operation
The bright IRWLs embedded in the roadway
along the painted stop bar activate automatically
when a light rail vehicle approaches. Because the
lights are only on when necessary, motorists and
cyclists associate them with a real need to stop.
This prevents 'warning fatigue' so that high
compliance levels are maintained over time.
